Root canal treatment or endodontic treatment is the process of removing the nerve or pulp from the tooth, cleaning out the canal where the nerve was and filling the root canal system. This procedure becomes necessary if the nerve of the tooth becomes traumatized, is badly decayed or infected. A root canal allows the tooth to be kept rather than extracted. Saving a natural tooth avoids replacing the tooth with an artificial tooth and maintains the function and balance of the full dentition.
A root canal may take more than one appointment. The area will be anaesthetized (frozen) for comfort and a rubber dam barrier will be placed around the tooth to isolate it. Dr. Wong or Dr. Shayan will drill into the tooth to access the nerve and will use very fine dental instruments to remove the nerve and clean the canal system. The root canal(s) will then be filled and sealed. Dental x-rays will be taken during a root canal to ensure all canals have been accessed.
A new filling will be placed in the tooth following a root canal. Dr. Wong and Dr. Shayan will recommend a full coverage crown on a tooth that has had a root canal to further protect the tooth from fracture or loss.
